چکیده

The 3D seismic data acquired in the central Qiongdongnan Basin, northwestern South China Sea, reveal presence of shallow gas hydrate, free gas, and focused fluid flow study area, which are indicated by multiple anomalies, including bottom simulating reflectors, polarity reverses, pulldowns, minor faults, chimneys intensively emplaced within strata. A new cold seep is also discovered at approximately 1520 m water depths with an ~40 wide crater west part area. Water column imaging, seafloor observation, sampling using remotely operated vehicle “Haima” demonstrate ongoing seepages hydrates this site. Thermogenic area migrates from deep reservoir through hydrate stability zone along faults chimneys, forms sustains localized seepage seep. results provide insight into relationship between accumulation hydrocarbon generation migration simultaneously have important implications for explorations Sea.

Palaeoenvironment and Its Control on the Formation of Miocene Marine Source Rocks in the Qiongdongnan Basin, Northern South China Sea

The main factors of the developmental environment of marine source rocks in continental margin basins have their specificality. This realization, in return, has led to the recognition that the developmental environment and pattern of marine source rocks, especially for the source rocks in continental margin basins, are still controversial or poorly understood. Through the analysis of the trace ...

Evaluation of Gas Production from Marine Hydrate Deposits at the GMGS2-Site 8, Pearl River Mouth Basin, South China Sea

Natural gas hydrate accumulations were confirmed in the Dongsha Area of the South China Sea by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey 2 (GMGS2) scientific drilling expedition in 2013. The drilling sites of GMGS2-01, -04, -05, -07, -08, -09, -11, -12, and -16 verified the existence of a hydrate-bearing layer. In this work gas production behavior was evaluated at GMGS2-8 by numerical simulation. ...

Analysis of the Physical Properties of Hydrate Sediments Recovered from the Pearl River Mouth Basin in the South China Sea: Preliminary Investigation for Gas Hydrate Exploitation

Laboratory based research on the physical properties of gas hydrate hosting sediment matrix was carried out on the non-pressurized hydrate-bearing sediment samples from the Chinese Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey 2 (GMGS2) drilling expedition in the Pearl River Mouth (PRM) basin. Measurements of index properties, surface characteristics, and thermal and mechanical properties were performed o...

Benthic fluxes of dissolved organic carbon from gas hydrate sediments in the northern South China Sea

Hydrocarbon vents have recently been reported to contribute considerable amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the oceans. Many such hydrocarbon vents widely exist in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). To investigate if these hydrocarbon vent sites release DOC, we used a real-time video multiple-corer to collect bottom seawater and surface sediments at vent sites. We analyzed concentra...
